Hello Hodge Just to say thanks for changing the band name. I'm afraid Scott has had a change of heart (for reasons I think you'll know) so his name can be taken off the list. Thanks, Lynn, The Sidekicks

Great site! But how's about another Photo page for recent/ modern Penicuik. You'd be surprised how many Penicuikers don't even know that there are (for example) monuments to the Mauricewood Disaster and the French prisoners. Maybe space for brief narrative with the pictures would be handy too.

Graham I'm taking your ideas on board. I have a few modern pictures & a lot more to take (once the weather improves). Even stranger things are the names given to places by Penicuikers that appear to have nothing to do with the present names. i.e. The Crown Inn - The middle or The Carnethie - The Roadhoose. I'll maybe have to add the Auld names in as well.

Good idea, as fairly recent residents of Penicuik, we found it very difficult to find out about the area and local activities as advertising for local events is not very obvious.

Hello Hodge Just read the review you done on the Sidekicks, It's really good. Shame you didn't see the whole gig, it was a really good night and we got great feed back from all the punters. You could maybe come along to one of our rehearsals one night and get a group photograph, probably next Wednesday at the Navaar if I can get us booked in. The next gig we've got at the Cuiken is Sat 13th March then Sat 10th April.......Make sure you get there on time!!! hee hee. Thanks Again Lynn x

i have to say that your review of the night in the vic could not be more off the mark . although i was not there personally myself i have heard nothing but praise from the people that did attend !!!!! i have to say i found your opening comments in your review nothing but scathing towards both the bands and the venue ( which was free) nothing but derogatory . i do hope you have the balls to print this on your web site . hope to speak to you soon .... yours stuart lawrie

Stu Sorry you took the review in that way. I thought both the bands were great. I know them all very well, & it was meant as a joke. If the bands think it was anything other than a joke let's hear from them. Check out the last sentence of the review quote "Great night folks it was good to see the Vic that busy with live music again".

To everyone at the Navaar open mike session on Sunday 7th March. I'm sorry I missed the day, I got caught up in affairs of the heart. Yes I do have one before any smart Alec replies! That was after Kenny Archibald spotted me in Tesco's. How's about someone writing a few lines for the review page? I hope the rumours aren't true that it was the last one.

Hodge, the open mic at the Navaar went really well. We had five bands perfoming their stuff who were: Belgranos (fantastic band and their first time there), Tonebrae (young lads with attitude and they do a personal favourite of mine, the White Stripes, brilliant!), Sunday Roast (Michael on vocals, who was very nervous as his parents were there but done brilliant non the less), Whale Engineering (also their first time there and their first ever performance. You have to see this band to believe it....VERY different! They even done a Bob Marley number 'No Woman No Cry' with a keyboard and made it their own) and then Rock of Ages got up and done a few numbers, their first performance since the Vic. Unfortunately Trish (vocals) couldn't make it but Michael filled in and done very well. Gary Oliver, what can I say......amazing! It was a very enjoyable day and everyone was fantastic, thanks again to all the bands who took part. As for it being the last ever open mic......rubbish, it's the first I've heard of this. We'd be sure to let everyone know if that was going to happen and we'd have it on this website. Cheers, Lynn

A link that might interest local bands seeking to "showcase" themselves might be at http://www.firstfoot.com/php/jockrock/ Uploads have to be completely free of copyright......... and, since there's a forum, with some very fothright contributors, a "thick skin" might be advisable

Julia A for Sale / Wanted page sounds okay, let me ponder on that one. You see I'd have to work out the legal implications. Although I could put a disclosure that it's nothing really to do with the site, "Caveat Emptor" you could say. I'll take it on board & think it over. Anyone else feel that a for Sale / Wanted page would be good?

Yes, I think it's a good idea. And it might bring the site a few more "hits" - it's surprising where you wind-up sometimes when you're looking for something on the Internet. A disclaimer would keep you clear of legal problems........ but maybe a wee word to the effect that you have to be over 18 to either advertise or buy might be sensible for obvious reasons. (Although how you might enforce such a rule could be tricky.)

Sorry folks I've looked into a For Sale / Wanted page. And to be honest it would be more trouble than it's worth. Besides there are already plenty of web sites out there catering for this. eBay being probably the most popular. Maybe someone out there should start a Penicuik for Sale / Wanted web site. Well with all the cards in the Supermarkets etc it could be a wee money maker!!! Hey I expect a cut of the profits for the suggestion tho'

Astrid the parade happens once a year usually on the last week in May. And there are events all week. Now a couple of web sites for information on Edinburgh / Scotland are http://www.edinburgh.org & http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk (good site if you want to visit all the historical sites in Scotland & the UK. I'm a member & for a joining fee of £32 for a year you can get into a lot of attractions for free. Which works out a lot cheaper than paying everytime you visit. Another local site is http://www.midlothian.org which is the official site for the area.

Hi John thanks for signing. John I wouldn't approach Jim Baird on the subject. I'm a friend of his & his photo's are a private collection. Jim has done years of research & hunting for his pictures. If I put them on the site they'll just be copied & published elsewhere as soon as certain people know they belong to Jim Baird. . Personally I'd never do that to Jim on purpose, Jim has always been very kind to me in the past. I've had the privilage of seeing a few of the unpublished ones he has. And they're cracking! I hope that they remain in a private collection. Or if they do ever end up getting published that the proceeds don't line someones pockets. It would be better that they help out a charity or something like that. I believe there is someone making up a book of Penicuik pictures just now. We'll just have to wait & see if any of the pictures from the site appear in it! Anyway I think I have a few of the Old school days myslef somewhere I'll have to look them out. All the best mate

Hey there its ben (guitarist) from phantom riffage, just read your review of the gig. thanks for the excellent write up, we love to know that people enjoyed our music as much as we do. sorry we couldn't stay for the rest of the night but we have got a pretty hectic schedule just now, and everyone in the band has other things going on. The gig at T in the carpark totally rocked, playing on the back of a trailer outdoors is always good. At first we didn't know what everyone would think of the riffage but everyone seemed to enjoy. I will have to email you the details for the final of the battle of the bands in perth cos we need all the support we can get to win the prize. (you get to record for free and get 500 copies of your demo!!!) hope to hear from you soon. ROCK ON!!! hutchy

Interesting Site especially the old maps and all the photos , in fact EVERYTHING is interesting. I have been intendind taking these sort pictures myself over the past few years, like from 1969 - but don't rush me! Yes, I'm one of those "Incomers" I read about. Probably we vastly outnumber the locals now . I wonder what the transition period is in years before one becomes a "local" Thanks.

Mauricewood Disaster. Thanks for putting up a couple of pictures! (A lot of people in Penicuik don't even know that memorial exists.) But how about a picture of the BACK of the stone where the names and ages of the victims are shown? (If I remember the rightly, the youngest was just 12 years old.)

Re.Mauricewood Pit Disaster.I recall learning all about this disaster during a history lesson at school and there was a book titled 'Old Penicuik',which vividly described the funeral procession in the horse drawn carriages en route to the graveyard at St.Mungos.

Hi Hodge - Congratulations on your website. Very impressive. I left Penicuik yonks ago and now live in Istanbul ! I was surfing a bit, reading about Penicuik Athletic and found your site. It is great to read about the old place. I wonder if any readers remember The Hilton Rabbits Club, Who Gives...?, Dunderfunk, General Damage, Crocodiles in Cream...,The Stud Rats, Penicuik bands that were going about in my day. I see you're not making money from the site - maybe you should! Nothing wrong with having a few adverts here and there. Good luck, and thanks.

Reviews don't talk to me about reviews!!! (Joking),I've asked plenty of people to give reviews on the bands. And a few have said yeah sure. All promises & hot air but nothing in print. I'm afraid I can't be at every gig, I have other vested interests. Plus you can only review a band so many times before you get accused of favouritism. As for the pictures, I'm afraid because of web space I have decided to cut it down to two or three pics per review. Listen if there is anyone out there who'd like to do the odd review. Get in touch, as long as you don't slag anyone off & it's constructive critism I'll publish it.

Hi Just a quick word to say i have really enjoyed the site, particularly looking at the photographs old and new. My dad also grew up in sdhottstown and lots of families moved to Glaskhill Terrace. I can just remember it prior to knocking it down (I was about 6 at the time!) and rememb even upto the sixties there used to be an old bus conductor who always shouted "Shottstown" when the bus was coming to a stop outside Shottstown miners club long after it was gone and replaced with the shops, new houses and the famous Tower clock (above the chippie) it never worked. Does it work now? Look forward to reading and seeing more!

Carol Thanks for signing the guestbook. The answer to your question is Yes the Tower Clock does work these days. My dad was also brought up in Shottstown his name is Adam Hodge, he's 82. They also lived in Pentland Terrace (one down from Glaskhill) from the mid sixties to the mid eighties. I have to say there are still a lot of people who call that area of Penicuik Shottstown.

Just a quick note of thanks to all those that were at the Carnethy on Friday 12th November to see Mojo and Sunday Roast. These bands are used to larger crowds, but the enthusiastic bunch that turned up more than made up for it. It was good to see folk supporting Kirk's (the manger) efforts to turn the place around. His love of live music is a real benifit to Penicuik. We all hope that the popularity of his live music events will grow and grow. Which reminds me to let you all know that Kirk is planning a Navaar esque open mic session Sunday 5th December at 3pm. Any bands that want to get involved please contact Kirk at the Carnethy or Steve Whitlock on 677636

Sorry the reviews have been a bit sparse over the past few months. I've had an ear infection & loud music seemed to aggravate the situation. I'm looking for pics & someone to review the past few bands I've missed. Just a few lines, but not the Mike Scott “They were brilliant Hodge” School of reviews (just joking mate). Hopefully I should make the next few bands, but I'm not promising anything (This is the third reoccurrence of the infection in 4 months, all together aw wee shame).

Morag I'm sorry too about having to cancel the reunion. But it was due to most of Penicuiks function halls having closed down. And the deposit required for the one suitable venue was, I'll be polite, slightly expensive to say the least. Also it was fully booked for Feb & March. That & pressure of work, not having the time to arrange things. I'm hoping to reschedule the reunion towards the end of 2005.

Hi Craig, The picture Alapin is enquiring about is indeed the Carnethy and the house next to it in what is now John Street. Lesley and i renovated the top half of the house in 1990 (it isn't one house but an upper and lower)and lived there until 1994. It used to belong to the Erringtons who owned Beeslack House (now Aarron House nursing home) and the downstairs was occupied by a father and daughter who were chauffeur and maid to the Errintons at Beeslack House and had life rent on the house. The upstairs part of the house that we bought had not been occupied for 25 years and was stuck in a time warp with a full cast iron cooking range in one room and various interesting fires in all the other rooms, including a room that was 28'long and 6'wide and had an Adams style fireplace at either end, bizarre! The downstairs flat had the bath in the kitchen! cheers Craig, see ya soon.

Hi Craig, You've put a power of work into this excellent site. Well done! Some comments about the old photos:- No. 9 in LH column entitled "Kirkhill, donated by John Robertson". This block of houses for Eskmill employees was known as "Oakleaf" and was at Eskbridge.. If you go down Kirkhill and then down Eskmill Brae, you eventually come to the bridge over the Esk at a Z-bend. Instead of crossing the bridge, go straight on and a few yards up on the left stood "Oakleaf". The front windows looked over to the bridge. No. 10 in LH column entitled "Valleyfield Mill, donated by John Robertson". This is actually Esk Mills that you see in the background. The house in the foreground is the Brickworks Cottage, better known as "The-house-that-was-built-in-a-day"! The story goes that the foundations were being laid as the first train went up to Penicuik in the morning and the tiles were being put on the roof when the last train came down at night! The only remaining landmark is the aforementioned bridge over the Esk. All the other buildings have gone --- Brickworks Cottage, "Shop Raw" which can be seen on the top right, Eskbridge Railway station, the paper mill including the Chief Engineers's house "Eskvale" (which is quite prominent) and, finally, bottom right, Burnside Cottages, of which more below. No. 8 in RH column entitled "Kirkhill, donated by John Robertson". This shows Laing's, latterly Adams', shop at the top of Kirkhill where the British Legion club is now located. No. 11 in RH column entitled "Full description to follow, donated by John Robertson". Burnside Cottages, Eskbridge. After the bridge at the Z-bend, the road straightens out for a short distance before climbing Harper's Brae. Before the Brae and also before a small bridge, you might see a slightly raised patch on the right. Burnside was there. The uniformed chap looks as though he could be the stationmaster from Eskbridge Station. Your list of place names used by old Penicuikians is interesting. I'm amazed to see that "Leesters" is still used to describe the Railway Tavern. Willie Lister who ran the place left there in the early fifties and the last time I saw him was in the early seventies in the now defunct Royal Hotel in Inverkeithing where he worked as a barman. The "Roadhoose" was built at a time when roadhouses were all the rage e.g. the Maybury in Edinburgh used to be the Maybury Roadhouse and the Carnethy Inn was The Carnethy Roadhouse. Keep up the good work! Jim Neil 8/12/04

Hi There. I'm currently researching my Family Tree and would be greatful if anyone in Penicuik could help me- I would like to know where Back O'mill land is or was- Someone has suggested it is where Croft Street now is. My gt gt Grandfather, Henry Grainger, lived there in 1881 as a lodger with William Innes and his wife Elisabeth and their two children William and Alexander. Also does anyone have any information on Auchindinny House- west wing, as my Gt Gt Grandmother, Georgina Cranston, was living there in 1881. A big thanks to all those submitting photographs, it's great to see how the area looked in the "old" days when my ancestors were floating about. Cheers Yvonne Galt

Jim & Gary thanks for the information. I've decided to do a "People's History of Penicuik" page. By talking to Penicookers & getting info like you both have submitted. I'm hoping to give a people's aspect of the town, traditions, what old building were originally used for. Something that you wont really get in the books. Thanks lads the information you have submitted is very much appreciated. New Page in early 2005!!!

Hello Yvonne, an ancient plan of Penicuik dated 1796 shows a road called "The Back of My Lands" where Croft Street is now. Say it quickly and it could sound like "Thebackomillands"! Regards Jim

Happy New Year to folk from Penicuik. I now realise that I've lived away from Penicuik for a lot longer than I lived IN it... Funny, that. I lived there from '75 to '88 or so. Walked away relatively unscathed; just a few bumps from falling off motorcycles. And out of trees. I think Jim Baird should write a book. He once humoured me as a wee kid, turning my wee bicycle upside-down and pretending to sort out the "engine." (The engine was a card of Danny McGrain pegged on a back fork with a clothes peg for that motor sound.) No reason to write a book in itself, I know...

Folks as a bit of an apology for the lack of gig reviews lately. I'm rather busy with some much needed home improvements. Therefore cash flow & time restrictions have meant I've not been to many gigs lately. I really would be grateful if some of you serial giggers would give me a brief review of the gigs. I’m sure the readers would like to hear other people’s perspectives of the bands. Also due to web space I’m going to be taking off all the old reviews very soon. Start afresh for 2005.

Great site - thanks for taking the time to build it. It brings back a lot of memories from my Peni childhood - does anyone else remember going to the old cinema before it shut down in the early 80s? Scary thing is that i still recognise half the names in the guestbook despite having left the area almost a decade ago! Does anyone have pics of the 'newer' areas of Peni being built? I lived on Cuiken Terrace and it would be great to see how that area developed.

Su I'm intending to try & take a view of modern day Penicuik for every old picture on the site. So that people can compare the differences. But I'll wait till the weather improves slightly. I can remember going to the "Flea Pit" nearly every Saturday matinee in the 70's. With Dolly Higgins telling us all off for talking. Or putting our knees up on the back of the chairs infront. ahhhhh memories. I'll see what I can do about photos of Cuiken for you too.

penicuik is a boring place!!!! there is nothing what so ever to do for teens except from the town hall disco which all the NED's go to! its a friday night and i am sitting on my computer complaining about penicuik. Everybody wonders why there is bad behaviour in penicuik because the teens have nothing to do so the end up causing trouble. penicuik is good for the adults but what about the teens??? you kind of miss us out!!! I think something sould be done more youth cafe's and activities and clubs to get us off the streets. if there is stuff on well it is not advertised enough. i think this website should have a teen section which tells us whats on in penicuik and tells good things to do.

Well to someone from Deanburn, why don't you tell us what you want to do? There is tons of stuff to do in Penicuik. Loads of clubs you can join. Tell you what if you want a teen page email me with your ideas & maybe you can do the teen page! I'm 42 you see a wee bit out of touch with what the teens want. When I was a teen the Sex Pistols were in the charts, mobile phones weren't even invented!!! Personal computers would have filled a room. Okay seriously get in touch with me & maybe you could do a page on the site for the under 21's out there.

I reckon "Someone from Deanburn" might have a good point. As is the case with the webmaster, i too am a wee bit passed the teen stage but think this is a positive way to go. There is plenty going on - footy clubs, air corps, disco's, etc at many locations - Ladywood, Queensway, etc. A "teens" section might be a good idea simply to advertise these things and make them known more.

Hi

Thanks for creating your insight to Penicuik - brings back some memories for me. I grew up in Penicuik from the age of 5 to 16, between 1952
and 1963. My name is Robert Wright and I then lived at 20 Anne Street. The property was new when our family moved in, my father at the time
was a miner working at Roslin Colliery the 'moat'. I would be delighted to here from anyone who knew me.

I have to thank Eddie Hanratty Jnr  - (aye Young Eddie) for telling me about the old photo's on the site, especially ones with my mother in them from the girls at the Mill (Ida Mutch - nee Gibson), showing my kids photo's of granny, and auntie (Babs Gibson Findlay Irvine picture) and not forgetting my cousin Elspeth Muirhead from the 1965 Gala..

Memories come flooding back especially seeing the ones of West Cairn Crescent being built ! I lived in Moorfoot place,, most of my memories from living in Penicuik are there, but  got that odd feeling when i see photo's of Bridge street, we moved away to Eyemouth 30 years ago, my mum still has a photo of me aged Minute! playing on my wee tractor & trailor in the snaw at the back green in bridge street.

My mum informs me that she also has a few old photo's so I have asked her if I can possibly send them to the webmaster for inclusion if he wishes.

a good site, and well put together.. thanks for the memories..

I was born and lived in Penicuik until I emigrated to Canada in 1954.  The pictures old and new brought back lots of memories.  My first school was Kirkhill School for a year before going to what is now the High School.

Keep up the good work!

Comments: I was born in Penicuik 58 years ago.  I've lived in a lot of places, I'm sort of settled here in Alberta Canada but sure miss old Penicuik.
My mom and dad, Cissy and Jimmy Millbank live next to the bowling club on Cranstone Street.  The pictures of old Penicuik are fabulous.  I will
be visiting Penicuik in May this year and hope to have the "grand tour".  Thanks for putting on such a great web site, keep up the good work!

Discovered this fine site last week.  Is the Jim Neil, of encyclopaedic local knowledge, the plumber>  If so how are you doing cousin? I was born in 1938 a house called Angle Park, a flat over Peggy Dodds's sweetshop, subsequently taken over by the Baird family, of whom Jim ran the garage next door.

The Harper's Brae phoaties are poignant to me as I lived for a few years in an old condemned property called 'Southbank' at the top of the brae.  We moved to Eskvale Crescent when it was built around 1952.  I left Penicuik when I worked for the railway and moved to Glesca in 1963 then came south to Sussex and joined the Polis in 1966, motivated by Dr Beeching's digging up the tracks.

My Dad was Wullie, my Mum Jessie.  My sister Cath still lives in the town. Hello to anyone with a memory long enough to remember me

It would be much appreciated!

Hi Craig.   This is a great site in many ways, not the least of which is in linking people who left Penicuik many years ago.   I'd like, if I
may, to respond to Allan Neil who wrote in on the 17th March.

No, Allan (aka Billy), I am not Jim Neil the plumber although I'm told he may be distantly related.  I worked in Valleyfield Paper Mills
before I left Penicuik in 1957.   I've moved around the country a bit and now spend my retirement in Edinburgh.

I didn't know you personally, but I know who you are.   Did your parents not used to live in Eastfield Park Road?  My late aunt, Mrs. Mercer,
lived in Eskvale Crescent.   Perhaps you remember her?  We lived for a spell at Pryde's Place, across the road from your house at Angle Park
and behind the buildings.

Southbank House where you lived was demolished many years ago and the name has been given to what used to be the lodge house.   There are no
other houses on Harper's Brae now.  I know of only one photograph of Southbank and you can find that if you register in SCRAN (costs you about
30 quid for the year!).   My mother's family all lived in that area. My grandmother's sister, (Mrs. Broon) lived at Southbank and features in
the photograph.  I had an aunt and uncle in Harper's Brae and my grandparents lived at the Old Manse, Eskbridge (where I was born).

Good to hear from you

Can anyone tell me more about the photograph that is the 13th down on the left of six men standing on a bridge titled "kindly donated by Mrs.
Cairns."  The man on the right is my Uncle, Alex Mair.

From left to right the men in the picture are Mr. Robertson (worked in Esk Mills and lived at Old Manse, Eskbridge); Jock Dickson (in later
life became manager of the Carnethy Roadhouse); Charlie Smith (my uncle, one of the Smiths' of the Old Manse. Worked as a machine-man in Esk
Mills); "Chud" Taylor (Esk Mills and Kirkhill). I don't know the next one but I might be able to find out who he is. Finally Alex. Mair on the extreme right.

I don't know where the photo was taken. On the extreme right you can see what could be the turning handle for a sluice and since the men
possibly all worked in Esk Mills, it could be somewhere on the lade between Valleyfield and Esk Mills.

Hiya Nan
I think I gave my opinion about the men on the bridge in an Email and hello too to Jim Neil (no mah cuzzin)
Having seen your replies about the men on the bridge, I think the bridge concerned is the wee bridge over the
Mill Lade on the Valleyfield side of the old Esk Mills sidings, near where there was a footbridge
across the river.  I used to walk the line every Sunday from the foot of Harper's Brae to Valleyfield to go
to Sunday School at the South Kirk.  Later when we moved to Eskvale Crescent I still used the line.  Even
though it was a Sunday I remember checking back for trains every few minutes.

Yes, my parents used to live in Eastfield Park Road.  When my Dad died, my Mum moved to a wee
bungalow just around the corner in Strathesk Road, then when she got more infirm, into the Warden-assisted flats
opposite the North Kirk. Re Southbank, I don't remember the names of the other occupants, except
one family was called the MacDonalds.  Mr MacDonald was quite a good semi-pro footballer.  I remember
they had a daughter - Anne - who was, in my adolescent eyes, so beautiful I did not dare even speak to her.  She
must have thought me a really snotty youth.  She came to my Mum's funeral in 2002 and I knew her straight away.

Hi Craig,
Back to visit your website for a look around the old town I must get back one of these days. Love the interactive map Excellent,
there is a great photo of the Bellmans from Cuiken primary down to the High school through the piggery brought back a flood of memories like
sledging & smoking out wasp hives. Taught my son skateboarding last year I still have the knack although a bit rusty (shocked the youngsters)
, you still got that G&S Fibreflex with the AC trucks it must be worth a bob or 2 now. Been down in Oz & currently down in Brazil on assignment.

Cheers,

John

Hello Craig,
Enjoyed your site, glad to see pics of Penicuik..
I was born in Penicuik in 1940 at Valleyfield House, thanks to the
kindness of Lord and Lady Clark who opened their home to refugees from Edinburgh during the war.. I have been trying to find a photo of
Valleyfield house and have had no luck, it may not be standing?? If it is I would love to have a photo for my Family Heritage book, or an
old photo would be great. I was christened in St James the Less and I do have a nice photo of it.. So if anyone can help I would be most thankful..

I will continue to check your site for more photo's. Good work...Thank you

Hi - Great site! Just wondering if anyone can help me?? When I was about 12 or 13 years old my best mate at the time moved to Penicuik from
Chattenden in Kent.  We lost touch over the following couple of years, & I would love to possibly get in contact with him again, & I was
wondering whether anyone knew him, or knew what happened to him?His name is Graham Wilson, & we both used to attend Hoo Middle School
in Hoo St. Werburgh in Kent. His dad was in the army, & he lived with his family at Chattenden Barracks. He had 2 brothers, called Peter &
